As per the Justice Reform and Transparency Act (2013), Justice Summits are held a minimum of once per year on a variety of topics to facilitate innovation in, and collaboration across, the justice and public safety sector.  Contemporary Justice Summits are based on a well-established tradition of frank problem-solving dialogue between senior leaders and decision-makers representing diverse organizations throughout the justice and public safety sector, as well as the broader social sector.  The reports of proceedings from past Justice Summits are available on the BC Justice Reform website.

Justice Summit participation is by invitation only.  Additionally, the Justice Summit maintains the principles of non-partisanship, non-attribution, and respect for organizational and statutory independence. Therefore, participant contributions will not be attributed to specific individuals or organizations. Moreover, while the 2022 Justice Summit will be convened through a virtual format, the recording of any sessions by participants is strictly prohibited.

We are grateful that members of the judiciary, including the heads of our three courts, are again joining the Justice Summit.  We appreciate their participation.  We trust, consistent with previous Justice Summits, that everyone will respect that because of the courts’ independent role, the judges and judicial staff are participating as observers and will not be commenting on, endorsing or suggesting policy choices, recommendations or other substantive matters.

A Justice Summit focused on collaboration and innovation in cross-sector partnerships

The 2022 Justice Summit will take on a different form than previous Summits. Given the current state of the pandemic and recent climate-related emergencies, the 2022 Justice Summit will be scaled down in size and scope. This shift is reflective of the current environment and resources available to deliver a successful Summit. Delivering an internally focused, planning Summit will enable us to provide a regular, full-scale Summit in the future.

This Justice Summit will provide government a forum conducive to focusing on lessons learned from navigating a novel and challenging past two years. This Summit will facilitate conversation and reflection on how the justice sector may build resiliency and improve its response to emergency situations moving forward, while recognizing that every day challenges resulting from emergency weather events and the pandemic remain ongoing.
