Compensation
In British Columbia, you are entitled to receive a fee for each day you sit on a criminal jury trial. Additionally, you are reimbursed for “necessary” and “reasonable” travelling, lodging and other expenses that result from “sitting” as a juror.
Fees
You will receive a daily fee for each day you sit or attend as a juror on a trial. The Ministry of Justice has set the following fees for each day:
- $20 a day for each of the first 10 days.
- $60 a day for the 11th to 49th days.
- $100 a day for 50 or more days.
Expenses
You must give all expense claims with receipts to the sheriff. The sheriff will let you know what expenses will be reimbursed. Be sure to keep all your receipts.
You may request that the sheriff prepare a letter for your employer describing your daily fee entitlement. You will receive the fee and expense reimbursements after your jury duty is completed.
You will not be reimbursed or receive any fees for days you are absent from court for a day or part of a day - and, you may be fined by the court for not attending.
Meals
Tea and coffee are provided. Jurors are responsible for all meals, except when the jury is deciding on a verdict. Meals and accommodation will be provided as needed while the jury is discussing the verdict.
