Legal Representation at Trial

You have the right to have a lawyer to represent you in court. If you cannot afford a lawyer, you may qualify for free or subsidized legal assistance from the Legal Aid - Legal Services Society. It is best to speak with a lawyer before you go to court the first time. Duty counsel are available in most courtrooms to help you with first appearances and to give you information about applying for legal aid. Not everyone qualifies for legal aid.

To find out how to get a lawyer and learn more about legal services and resources available to you, please visit: Legal Assistance - Services and Resources.

How to Get Information

To get information about what will happen at your trial talk to your lawyer. If you are in court because you have not followed the rules of your probation, talk to either the Crown counsel or your probation officer. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
