Impaired Driving

Impaired driving carries serious consequences for the driver and innocent victims. If a driver is impaired and causes a crash, whether it results in a death or not, the effects can change or ruin lives forever. It could also mean life in prison for the impaired driver.

Impaired driving involves being behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol, prescription or illegal drugs, and even over-the-counter cold medication to the point where it can impair your driving abilities. This is considered a criminal offence. Consequences for this act can include loss of your driver's licence, being fined or time in prison. To avoid impaired driving, plan ahead - for example, choose a designated driver or take a taxi.

Some driving offences are criminal offences. They include street racing and reckless or dangerous driving that puts others in danger.

  • A victim of a criminal driving offence is someone who has been injured or killed by a driver who is breaking the law. A victim could also be a family member or loved one of someone killed by a driver breaking the law. Victims can get 24-hour information, support and referral by calling VictimLink BC.
