Justice Reform

B.C. is continually working to make the justice system better. The criminal justice system includes courts, B.C. Corrections, police, lawyers, social workers, probation officers, family services and community groups.

The term justice reform refers to changes being made to improve the justice system by:

  • making it easier for British Columbians to access information and resources;
  • making justice information easy to understand and use;
  • making court rules simpler for the public to follow; and
  • helping offenders solve problems that drive their criminal behaviour.

Criminal Justice Reform

The ministries of Justice and Children and Family Development are working together to design and undertake pilot projects to:

  • bring crime down;
  • manage prolific offenders more closely; and
  • make the criminal justice process timely and efficient.

Each pilot project will be evaluated and the results will guide decisions about ongoing criminal justice reforms.

Criminal justice reform projects use an evidence-based approach to identify and design pilots that test new ways of responding to crime. This involves looking at examples from around the world that have proven successful in preventing or reducing crime and can be adapted for B.C.
