Aboriginal Initiatives

Some organizations and initiatives that support Aboriginal people in contact with the criminal justice system help Aboriginal communities and assist families with counselling and support needs are listed below.

Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of B.C.

The Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of B.C. services for Aboriginal people and communities, include:

  • counselling and referral services for alcohol and drug abuse;
  • support for family and youth;
  • assistance while in the criminal justice system;
  • community outreach; and
  • training and workshops.

Victim Services

Aboriginal victims of crime can find victim service programs in their communities by calling VictimLink BC. VictimLink’s services are available in 130 languages and dialects, including 17 North American Aboriginal languages. The Aboriginal Justice Strategy

The Aboriginal Justice Strategy - Department of Justice Canada supports Aboriginal communities working towards reducing crime and victimization.

The strategy is involved in four types of alternative justice activities:

  • alternative measures;
  • sentencing circles and peacemaking;
  • mediation and arbitration in family and civil cases; and
  • the court justice program.

The Aboriginal Justice Strategy has supported projects with First Nations and tribal councils, Aboriginal coalitions, Inuit hamlets, Métis organizations, community groups and other non-profit organizations.
