Community Safety Tips

Communities throughout British Columbia are developing or have developed community safety programs.

A safe community supports its citizens to be responsible, flexible and aware. Safe communities build connections between families, children, youth, seniors, schools, police and businesses. Everyone has a role to play in creating safe communities.

The following are some tips to help you and your community come together to prevent crime.

  • Learn about and encourage the use of the Search Institute's 40 developmental assets in your family, schools and communities. The developmental assets represent the relationships, opportunities and personal qualities that youth need to avoid risks and thrive.
  • Engage your community to develop a community crime prevention action plan. The Community Crime Prevention Guide is a great tool.
  • Be aware of local crime issues. You can find information about issues affecting your community through your local police, the Ministry of Justice, your local media and by talking with others in your community.
  • Support local organizations or community policing offices that are working to prevent crime and improve the well-being of communities by volunteering your time or giving a donation.

Several organizations in B.C. are involved in initiatives to build safe communities and prevent crime. For more information, visit Organizations and People.
